Portuguese Regions rely on small events for economic upturn

Portuguese Regions believe small events, mainly sports events, may have an important role on the economic upturn post COVID-19.
These and other views were shared on the web conference “COVID-19 impact on Sports Events”, organized by the Sports Events Portuguese Association, that took place on April 20.
According to João Fernandes, the president of Região de Turismo do Algarve, sports events have been of great importance to overcome seasonality. However, the upturn will be mainly with small-scale sports events. Pedro Machado, the President of Turismo Centro de Portugal, has also reinforced that small-scale events bring thousands of people, creating a significant dynamic on the region’s economy.
Nesta conferência foi igualmente destacada a obrigatoriedade de a retoma ser suportada por um plano sanitário, aguardando-se a este respeito indicações e orientações por parte do Governo e da Direção-Geral de Saúde.
The need for a health sanitary plan was also referred as a must to support tourism comeback, so the players are waiting for the necessary guidance from the Government and from the National Health Department.
