Faro airport invests in new terminal

Faro airport opened a new terminal, after a 32.8 million euros investment, which resulted in more public, operational areas and a retail zone renewal.

With this investment, the infrastructure has gained more processing capacity for aircraft, passengers and new accessibility. "With this expansion, Faro Airport increases its terminal ability to board and disembark from 2400 to 3000 people per hour. The gare was enlarged from 81,200 square metres to 93,120 square metres, following the increase of the operating and public areas, while the retail and eating areas were also expanded and revitalised,” according to ANA, the manager of Portuguese airports, in a statement.

With these changes, Faro has now a capacity of 30 movements per hour, instead of 24. The airport of the Algarve capital registered, in 2016, its biggest growth: 18.5%, exceeding 7 million passengers, the same statement reads.

"This terminal modernisation aims to adapt the infrastructure to a new paradigm of air transport that is happening in Portugal and throughout Europe: the increasing use of low-cost airlines, as Faro airport is experiencing an increase in low cost airline passengers, and a reduction of passengers on other types of flights. This reality results in a new passenger profile, with new needs and which tends to remain at the terminal longer," the document explains.
