Monastery of Santa Maria da Vitória, commonly known as Batalha Monastery (due to the name of its location), is considered one of the symbols of Portugal, particularly in the centre of the country, andis one of the most visited monuments in the country.
It was commissioned by King João I to express gratitude for the victory in Aljubarrota Battle in the 14th century. This emblematic work took 150 years to complete, experiencing several phases of construction and incorporating different artistic styles, such as Gothic, Manueline and Renaissance. Soon after the beginning of its construction, the king donated the building to the Dominican Order, that maintained it until its extinction, in the 19th century.
Santa Maria da Vitória Monastery is listed as a World Heritage Site since 1983.
