Luís Araújo, president of Turismo de Portugal, won the election for the presidency of the ETC - ‘European Travel Commission’, counting 16 votes (out of 29 cast), also leading this European organization over the next three years.

Founded in 1948, The European Travel Commission (ETC) is a European organization representing 33 National Tourism Organizations from 31 countries in Europe, with the mission of promoting and reinforcing the sustainable development of Europe as a tourist destination.

To achieve this purpose, ETC and the European Commission (COM) have developed a long-term strategic partnership for the promotion of Europe as the world's leading tourist destination, supporting the sector's sustainable competitive development through knowledge sharing, research tourism and the promotion of socially and environmentally viable models for the activity.

Turismo de Portugal's commitment to innovation and digital technology, successfully diversifying its tourism products, and boosting visitors throughout the national territory, which has been seen as exemplary in Europe, was one of the reasons that most collaborated for this national victory. Also, the fact that Portugal has managed to achieve the lowest seasonality rate in the entire Mediterranean region and to register a tourist growth above 60% in the last four years, was highly valued and contributed decisively to the victory in this European election.
