Portugal Talks is a Think-Action tank which promotes a biannual discussion and action meeting, aimed at the politically interested civil society. Committed to impartiality, feasibility, pragmatism and seriousness, the Portugal Talks is the transformed intention to change Portugal, gradually and carefully, for the better.
Portugal Talks first edition will focus on voter turnout. Portugal has now the most well prepared and educated generations ever, and has achieved the best education and health indicators in its history. Indicators for quality of life are the best ever. And yet, voter turnout has been steadily decreased for twenty years.
Is this a Portuguese phenomenon or part of a trend of Western democracies? Is democracy a victim of its own success? What is the meaning of not voting: alienation and indifference? Or is it a silent protest? Why don’t young people vote? What social, economic and territorial inequalities may influence electoral participation?
On October 19, come and meet us at Nova School of Business and Economics, to debate abstention in the discussion that is not just words.
