Elvas Municipal Library (BMELV) is a public informational, educational and cultural equipment of the Municipality of Elvas. Located in the historical centre, it is installed in the old Jesuit College of Elvas, which began to be built in the middle of the 17th century, having been inaugurated, with great ceremonial, on 17th August 1692. At the end of the century, the building would be occupied by the Municipal Museum and the Library, but also housed Dr. Santa Clara Primary School, António Thomaz Pires Primary School, Colégio Elvense, the Industrial and Commercial School and finally the city's high school.
BMELV was inaugurated on June 10th 1880, integrated in the celebrations held at the time of the three-year anniversary of the death of Luís de Camões. By sheltering the bookstores of the extinct convents of the cities and important private donations, this library has a vast estate of great historical and literary value.
In 2005, after long years of common coexistence in the same building with the Archaeological and Ethnological Museum António Tomás Pires, it closed its doors for remodelling under the contract with the Portuguese Book Institute and the IPLB Library. Its reopening took place on November 3rd 2007, as well as its integration in the National Network of Public Libraries.
