The Conimbriga Monographic Museum - National Museum located near the city of Coimbra opened in 1962 with a mission to preserve and protect the ruins of the ancient Roman city of Conimbriga, dating from the 9th century BC, . These ruins have been known since the 16th century, but the first studies were developed by the Coimbra Institute only in the mid-nineteenth century. The excavations began in 1929.
The museum collection is exclusively composed of artifacts collected in the city. It also has a permanent exhibition of everyday objects used by populations that inhabited the Roman settlement.
The Fountain House (originally Casa dos Repuxos) stands out, as a large residential building, whose construction dates from the beginning of the first century. This space presents a significant paved area of mosaic, murals and water games, among other elements.
For events, the museum complex has some large venues, with varying capacities.
