Tourism and cinema support fund already in effect

The Tourism and Cinema Support Fund has already come into force, aiming to position Portugal as a destination for international filming. In a statement, the Portuguese Ministry of Economy recalled that this fund "has a capital of 50 million euros, initially made with 30 million euros. Of this amount, 10 million euros will be invested in attracting large international events; 10 million will be channeled to support companies and 10 million euros will be invested annually as an incentive for film production and international filming, part of it possibly being used to organise scouting visits to Portugal."

The diploma that regulates this Fund was published in the Portuguese Journal of the Assembly of the Republic on June 19th and entered into force the following day. This fund will be managed by Turismo de Portugal, in conjunction with the Institute of Cinema and Audiovisual. "The new incentive plan for film productions in Portugal can reach 30% in cash rebate, which will be one of the most competitive in Europe," the statement said.

The document quotes the Secretary of State for Tourism, Ana Mendes Godinho, who stressed that the Fund "will allow Portugal to position itself as one of the main destinations for film and cinema in the world." Miguel Honrado, Secretary of State for Culture, mentioned that this "will be an important tool to attract quality productions that can make the best use of the full potential of Portuguese resources and also value our culture."
