The Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum was built between 1904 and 1905, based on a project by the architect Norte Júnior at the request of painter José Malhoa, for his residence and workshop. The so-called "Malhoa House" received the Valmor Award in 1905, probably the most prestigious Portuguese and Lisbon award in architecture.
Later, in 1932, the building was bought by doctor Anastácio Gonçalves, who lived there and gathered an art collection of about 3000 pieces, namely Portuguese painting from the 19th and 20th centuries, Chinese porcelain, Portuguese and foreign furniture, as well as several pieces of jewellery, painting, sculpture, ceramics, textiles, numismatics, glasses and pocket watches. In 1969, by the will of its owner, the building was bequeathed to the Portuguese State, so that a museum could be established.
After opening to the public in 1980, the Dr. Anastácio Gonçalves House-Museum received a number of interventions and improvements, which included the annexation of a house, also made by Norte Júnior. Reopened to the public in December 2017, this small art museum added to the doctor's collection several items from painter Silva Porto's own collection (drawings, watercolours and small artifacts). It also has shops, cafeterias and an area for temporary exhibitions
The museum promotes different projects and educational activities and has a room for events, with capacity for 60 people.
