Portugal wins Europe's Leading Destination award

Portugal won the award for Europe's leading destination for the second year in a row at the World Travel Awards in Athens, Greece.
"Our country received this award for the first time in 2017 and now again in 2018. Other nominees for this award were Austria, England, France, Germany, Greece, Ireland, Italy, Norway, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and Turkey," the Tourism Secretary of State said in a statement.
Globally, Portugal has brought 36 awards home. "In addition to the prize for Europe's Leading Destination, Madeira was voted Europe's Leading Island Destination and Lisboa is Europe's Leading City Destination and Europe's Leading Cruise Port. Turismo de Portugal has once again been recognised as Europe's Leading Tourist Board," according to the same statement.
Quoted in the document, Ana Mendes Godinho, Secretary of State for Tourism, said that "receiving the 'Oscar' for Best European Destination for the second consecutive year is something that fills us with pride and proves that Portugal remains at the top of international tourist preferences. These results show that our strategy is clearly paying off and that the world looks at Portugal as an example, also motivating us to continue the work of qualifying our suppliers and destinations, extending tourism throughout the territory and all year round, making it increasingly sustainable."
